DAWN Informs: Reimagining Macroeconomics from a South Feminist Perspective

This October 2025, we are pleased to present a new issue of the DAWN Informs, DAWN’s periodical publication showcasing the organisation’s latest analyses, critiques and commentaries. Titled “Reimagining Macroeconomics: A Feminist Perspective From The South”, this edition presents the main findings of six case studies under DAWN’s research project on Global South Feminist Perspectives on Macroeconomics.

Feminist economist and DAWN executive committee member Corina Rodríguez Enríquez outlines in her introduction the conceptual framework that guided the research conducted within the scope of the project. She emphasises that Feminist Economics has, for a long time, contributed to macroeconomic analysis. However, due to the numerous transformations the world has experienced over the past decades, an updated and more robust feminist analysis of these trends, their main issues, and the challenges they present is not just desirable; it is crucial.

In this DAWN Informs issue, the reader will find the main insights from the conceptual framework authored by Rodríguez Enríquez and from six case studies, starting with a piece by Lena Lavinas that explores the transition from financialization to assetization and the challenges posed by contemporary capitalism from a feminist perspective. Dzifa Torvikey and Kofi Asante share lessons from Ghana’s debt crisis, focusing on austerity, sovereign debt, and social development. Vagisha Gunasekera, Tharundi Illeperuma, and Danidhu Vithanawasam provide an analysis of debt issues in middle-income countries, using Sri Lanka as a case study. Chenai Mukumba examines the role of International Financial Institutions (IFIs) in current macroeconomic trends, with a specific focus on the global tax system. Andrea Larios Campos offers a feminist perspective on global tax governance. Lastly, Emilia Reyes’s contribution, “System Change Before Planetary Collapse,” presents a feminist perspective on ecological justice and macroeconomics.
