DAWN Dialogue “Fundamentalisms, militarization and Corporate Power”: Feminists in a tricky and fierce new world

How to understand the current backlash against human rights and the dismantling of long time fought social agendas on education, health, workers and environment rights? How to unpack the connections between this backlash and the growing influence of corporate power, religious fundamentalist forces, Narco States and paramilitary forces in development debates and policies? How to recover the sovereignity of the states and defend our democracies?
How to confront the persistent criminalization of dissent and the violence and killing of human right defenders? How to deal with the weakening of the multilateral systems? How to recover our language and reclaim our feminist struggles and agendas?
These were some of the questions intensely debated by feminists from more than ten countries of the global South during a two-day dialogue in Bahia, Brazil, previous to DAWN´s participation in the World Social Forum (WSF).
The exchange was part of a series of dialogues that DAWN has been promoting since 2017 to create spaces for reflection and strategizing, with the aim that this sharing of experiences and identification of common questions will help groups and individuals to think more deeply about ways to advance all forms of human rights and justice, especially gender justice, in a fierce and tricky world.
The group of feminists that took part in the debate included women from Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific, experienced in different areas of activism and advocacy, such as education, conflict resolution, workers’ rights and LGBT rights.
Some of the main conclusions of the dialogue were the need for building new narratives and new alternatives while mapping struggles and spaces of resistance; rethinking and analising the new geopolitical context while better examining actors and detractors; recreating a new framework of analysis that includes new visions, new strategies for long terms collaborations within the feminist movement and with other movements; reflecting around the kind of multilateralism that we need and the forms of international cooperation to respond to the new context; doing a careful and critical analysis of what worked and what did not work in our feminist organising and mobilising; improving collaborations and strategies with black feminisms, indigenous feminisms, LGBTQ feminism; and reformulating the role of education and media in this new context.
The two-day meeting was a perfect venue to prepare for the participation in the WSF. We finished the debates with the conviction that the Forum is a key space to continue elaborating on the strategies discussed and the need to map opportunities and allies to the future of our agenda to achieve gender, economic and environmental justice.
We closed with an invitation to all participants to continue the collaboration with DAWN in the face of the next G20 summit and the co-organising of the Feminist Forum that will take place in Argentina in November 2018.

Diálogo DAWN “Fundamentalismos, militarización y poder corporativo”: Feministas en un nuevo mundo engañoso y feroz

¿Cómo entender la actual reacción en contra los derechos humanos y el desmantelamiento de las agendas sociales sobre educación, salud, trabajadores y derechos ambientales que fueron resultado de largos procesos de lucha? ¿Cómo desentrañar las conexiones entre esta reacción violenta y la creciente influencia en los debates y las políticas de desarrollo del poder corporativo, las fuerzas fundamentalistas religiosas, los estados Narco y las fuerzas paramilitares? ¿Cómo recuperar la soberanía de los estados y defender nuestras democracias?
¿Cómo enfrentar la persistente criminalización de la disidencia y el asesinato de defensores de los derechos humanos? ¿Cómo lidiar con el debilitamiento de los sistemas multilaterales? ¿Cómo recuperar nuestro lenguaje y reclamar nuestras luchas y agendas feministas?
Estas fueron algunas de las preguntas intensamente debatidas por feministas de más de diez países del Sur global durante un diálogo de dos días en Bahía, Brasil, previo a la participación de DAWN en el Foro Social Mundial (FSM).
El intercambio fue parte de una serie de diálogos que DAWN ha estado promoviendo desde 2017 para crear espacios de reflexión y estrategias, con el objetivo de compartir experiencias e identificar preguntas comunes que ayuden a pensar más profundamente sobre cómo avanzar todas las formas de derechos humanos y de justicia, especialmente la justicia de género, en un mundo feroz y engañoso.
El grupo de feministas que participó en el debate incluyó mujeres de África, América Latina, Asia y el Pacífico, con experiencia en diferentes áreas de activismo, como educación, resolución de conflictos, derechos de las y los trabajadores, y derechos de la comunidad LGBT.
Algunas de las principales conclusiones del diálogo fueron la necesidad de construir nuevas narrativas y nuevas alternativas, así como mapear las luchas y los espacios de resistencia; repensar y analizar el nuevo contexto geopolítico mientras examinamos mejor a los actores y detractores; recrear un nuevo marco de análisis que incluya nuevas visiones, nuevas estrategias para colaboraciones a largo plazo dentro del movimiento feminista y con otros movimientos; reflexionar sobre el tipo de multilateralismo que necesitamos y las formas de cooperación internacional para responder al nuevo contexto; hacer un análisis cuidadoso y crítico de lo que ha funcionado y lo que no ha funcionado en nuestra organización y movilización feminista; mejorar las colaboraciones y estrategias con los feminismos negros, los feminismos indígenas, el feminismo LGBTQ; y reformulanr el papel de la educación y los medios de comunicación en este nuevo contexto.
La reunión de dos días sirvió como espacio perfecto para preparar para la participación en el FSM. Terminamos los debates con la convicción de que el Foro es un espacio clave para continuar elaborando las estrategias discutidas y para mapear oportunidades y aliados para el futuro de nuestra agenda de lograr la justicia de género, económica y ambiental.
Cerramos con una invitación a todos los participantes para continuar la colaboración con DAWN de cara a la próxima cumbre del G20 y la organización del Foro Feminista que tendrá lugar en Argentina en noviembre de 2018.
